sounds silly, i know.
I say yes, my roommate says no. It's a Friday during lent... so, for Catholics, is it okay to eat pork skins?
sources will be appreciated.
thanks
Are pork skins considered meat?
No, it isn't all right to eat pork skins or any food containing beef, pork, or chicken as an ingredient or flavoring. That would include soups made with chicken or beef broth, casseroles containing meat, or any by-product of meat such as potted meat or pork skins:
"That's why, under current Church law, the days of abstinence fall during Lent, the season of spiritual preparation for Easter. On Ash Wednesday and all of the Fridays of Lent, Catholics over the age of 14 are required to abstain from meat and from foods made with meat."

Are pork skins considered meat?
yeah, pork skin aint meat
Reply:since when is porkskin a vegetable? ofcourse its meat...
Reply:meat = muscle
skin = organ
so the main question is: are organs also considered meat?
edit: and yes, they are
Reply:Technically it is flesh but calling it meat is a matter of opinion. But a lot of what is sold as "pork skins or rinds" is not animal at all. But whipped pork flavored deep-fried something else. She would have to check the label to see if any animal product is even used.
Reply:Yes. not healthy , but meat.
Reply:The dermis is an organ the largest and heavyest organ on the body. So anatomically no.
Reply:What does she think pork comes from? Yes, it's skinned pig. (YUCK!)
It's not a fruit.
It's not a vegetable.
It's not a grain.
It comes from the flesh of an animal; if giving up meat it's forbidden.
Quoted: "and animals are considered to be made of meat."
*sigh* I never understood that mentality. We're made of "meat", then. Anyone for a human sandwich? (Okay, now everyone has their hand up, lol.)
Reply:Yes they are.
Reply:Yes. If they are real. Look at the ingredients... most are the fried flesh of pork. Some may be fried grain products, but these are artificial.
Reply:It may not be the "meaty" part of the animal, but it's still "animal product," and animals are considered to be made of meat.
If it's not...what else is it? It's certainly not plant material.
Reply:Yes!
Reply:If it's made of meat, it's meat. If it contains meat-derived products (like gelatine or something) I don't think that counts.
Reply:You ever see how they make them? I saw it on Dirty Jobs.. its the skin deep fried .. so of course its meat. So is bacon, ham and all parts of that animal.
I am sure you can get a tuna sub at Subway :)
or switch to cheese curls!!
Blessings!
Reply:Pork skins are meat. Religious strictures are to be decided by authorities of that faith. Which is to say, if Catholics aren't to eat meat on Fridays during Lent, Catholics need to check with their priest as to whether pork skins are meat.
Reply:It's in the 'meat' food group.
Reply:Keep in mind the glue on that that stamp you lick is made out of animals.
Reply:I guess it's a matter of interpretation. Pork skins are cooked from cut up pieces of hog's skin that is still attached to the fat. Personally, I think eating the flesh of any animal, cooked or not, is eating meat. I'm a Deist, so I deny the Bible, but I think in the book of Leviticus there are instructions to not eat meat from an animal with "split hooves," which eliminates pigs, which eliminates Pork rinds/skins, or whatever they're called.
Reply:In the Bible in Leviticus, G-d says His people are not to eat blood or fat.
We are learning why as modern medicine continues to make progress.
Your friend should not be eating pork skins.
However, that being said, Romans 14 says that we each should honor G-d in the way that He tells us and that we should not judge each other about what we eat or don't eat or what day we worship on.

Romans 14
The Weak and the Strong
1Accept him whose faith is weak, without passing judgment on disputable matters. 2One man's faith allows him to eat everything, but another man, whose faith is weak, eats only vegetables. 3The man who eats everything must not look down on him who does not, and the man who does not eat everything must not condemn the man who does, for God has accepted him. 4Who are you to judge someone else's servant? To his own master he stands or falls. And he will stand, for the Lord is able to make him stand.
5One man considers one day more sacred than another; another man considers every day alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind. 6He who regards one day as special, does so to the Lord. He who eats meat, eats to the Lord, for he gives thanks to God; and he who abstains, does so to the Lord and gives thanks to God. 7For none of us lives to himself alone and none of us dies to himself alone. 8If we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.
9For this very reason,Messiah died and returned to life so that he might be the Lord of both the dead and the living. 10You, then, why do you judge your brother? Or why do you look down on your brother? For we will all stand before God's judgment seat. 11It is written:
" 'As surely as I live,' says the Lord,
'every knee will bow before me;
every tongue will confess to God.' "[a] 12So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God.
13Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in your brother's way. 14As one who is in the Lord Yeshua (Jesus) , I am fully convinced that no food[b] is unclean in itself. But if anyone regards something as unclean, then for him it is unclean. 15If your brother is distressed because of what you eat, you are no longer acting in love. Do not by your eating destroy your brother for whom Messiah died. 16Do not allow what you consider good to be spoken of as evil. 17For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit, 18because anyone who serves Messiah in this way is pleasing to God and approved by men.
19Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification. 20Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. All food is clean, but it is wrong for a man to eat anything that causes someone else to stumble. 21It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything else that will cause your brother to fall.
22So whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the man who does not condemn himself by what he approves. 23But the man who has doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin.

Reply:No question - yes. Even chicken broth counts, sorry.
Reply:Pork skin is an organ. Pigs have many edible organs. Meat is muscle. But meat is an all encompassing word for all sorts of parts of an animal. Pork skin is flesh of the meat and is part of the meat. Besides when you peel off the skin of a pig in all likelihood some of the fat as well as the muscle are probably stuck to it. Who wants to eat pig anyway, don't you know that there is not only mad cow disease, but mad pig disease too??!! A lot of people don't realize it because it wasn't as widely reported by the media. But kid you not - surf the internet and you will find it.
God Bless,
Over The Rainbow
Reply:Meatless Friday is a human tradition, not a commandment from God. The only people Jesus lost patience with were the Scribes %26amp; Pharisees who valued their traditions over the commandments from God.
Reply:They are meat, they are also unclean. So even if the pope says you can eat them the Savior says you shouldn't.
