Animal skins and its process of the past and today?

I need help on getting information on how skins of animals were treated to be worn from far back in history of the time of the caveman to even today of our time. I need to know the process from skinning to tanning and what they did and used. Also other uses they had for the skins of animals different from what is well known of clothes and foot wear. If any websites that has the information I seek and the process, it will be helpful.
Animal skins and its process of the past and today?
Check out brain tanning leather. There are several sites that describe the process.

Leather was also used to make containers, from pouches to boxes, and for armor, bindings, and many other purposes.

Basically, a hide is removed from the animal using a sharp knive or stone, then is scrapped clean of flesh. To remove the hair, it is soaked for days, then the hair is also scrapped off. The hide can then be tanned in some chemical solution, e.g. an oak bark solution, or further rubbed down to soften it, and in primitive groups, smoked over a fire.

Modern humans were apparently the first to use needles and thread. How Neanderthals made clothing is unkown, but they must have used large punched holes.
