I am 20 years male and have volunteered at the YMCA here where I live. I will be coaching a boys basketball team with kids aged 12-15. I went for my interview and they told me that they had no uniforms and that the kids have to play shirts and skins. I don't mind but the kids might. When I was 11, I had to take off my shirt for basketball, it was part of gym. What should I do? Should I buy my own uniforms? The games will be inside and mainly outisde. Even on game nights where we play against other teams that have uniforms the kids still have to shirtless accoriding to the YMCA
Shirts VS Skins?
some parents don't like there kids playing without a shirt so we use to play shirts against, shirts inside out . it was hard at times but it was all in fun. or you can tell the kids to bring both a light shirt and a dark shirt and play that way. when playing other teams, you may have to tell then to wear the same color shirt. or maybe go to a local store/restaurant and see if they would donate some shirts for the kids..
Shirts VS Skins?
Yes, I agree with you, when I was 12, I hated taking off my shirt in public. But, at a practice, ask your boys if they mind or if they want uniforms. Tell them the situation. I would try to get uniforms, but make sure it is ok with the YMCA.
Good luck
Reply:Nothing wrong with shirts and skins.
But, if it really bothers you then you should go to a local sporting good store and buy pennies (cheap, solid colored jerseys).
.
Reply:In practice or in pick up games, shirts and skins is perfectly okay. I played for years with adult men and we always went shirts and skins and we certainly did it when I was a kid. However, in a game against other teams and with fans there, a uniform would be much more appropriate. I am not a fan of 12 and 13 year old having great jerseys with their names on them, but a minimal jersey seems practical.
