My dog's anus seems iritated. Its red & the skins broken & its maybe a bit swolen. what could this be?

he is scooting after pooping and licking the area an awful lot. i wonder if its similar to a babys diaper rash - should i try desitan?

it is probably his anal glands infected or needing expressed. take him to a vet post haste. the dog is surely very uncomfortable.

It sounds like his anal sacs may be infected. You should take him to the vet. It is a good thing to have them removed altogether, or at least emptied on a regular basis.
Reply:go to your local vet as quickly as you can
Reply:take it to the vet! when my dog does that her butt itches really bad!
Reply:INFECTION IN THE ANAL GLANDS.ANTI-BIOTICS ARE NEEDED.SEE YOUR VET.
Reply:take him to the vet and they could tell u!!!
Reply:Well i think thats pretty normal. i had ALOT of dogs. (MALE dogs) they would just lick the area to clean off. and the dog i have know (Female) does the scooting thing to but only because it has poop stuck on its butt lol so i have to go clean it off. But if YOUR dog has some red aorund the anus i think you should call the vet as soon as you can.

Reply:It sounds like your doggie's anal glands need emptying. Have your vet do this. He can give you something for your dog's rash and infection. Sometimes people products are not what we should use on dogs. The vet will give you something like Desitan only for dogs to clear up the rash and maybe he'll give your little doggie a shot for the infection. If not, he'll tell you how to give the pills or liquid.
Reply:take your dog to the vet and have him check your dog for PF
Reply:Please do not put desitan on your dog.Go to your vet. Ir sounds like the anal glands are infected. They need to be expressed before they abscess. the signs you listed are typical for anal glands.
